First off, we haven’t yet visited Sardinia. It was one of our first choices for this winter, though. We loved Sicily in the off-season, and from all we’ve found out Sardinia vanlife is just as good. Smaller but grand.

Beaches in Sardinia

The beaches and surfing in off-season seem to be at a high point in the off-season. It’s one of the reasons we were serious about traveling there – what kind of surfer would Armando be if he didn’t check out the local waves?

The island is pretty temperate, too, which means you don’t suffer from a hardcore winter.

The beaches are clean and give you a chance to take walks along the coastlines without worrying about stepping in or on something nasty. I imagine lazing outdoors for some space from the van confines and feeling relaxed.

The History and Archaeology of Sardinia

It might seem unbelievable that Sardinia’s history dates back 7,000 years ago, but it’s true. As a history buff, I find it fascinating.

Such a rich history makes the country a must-see for people who love to discover historical sites and culture. It was one of the main reasons I wanted/still want to visit.

It’s an energetic and traditional culture that thrives on meshing the new with the old (particularly ‘Nuraghi’). And it’s constantly evolving, which for such a classic and ancient people is infused with the Old World.

Some example include the ruins of settlements and tombs dotted around Sardinia. One of the best ways to see them is by using a campervan hire in Sardinia, like Yep Campers, which lets you travel even in remote places that public transport can’t do.

Hiking the Mountains in Sardinia

The interior of Sardinia is something that Armando would love, because he’s an avid hiker. He’s been up most of the most famous mountains Europe has to offer. Sardinia’s mountain hikes are generally considered rugged but do-able.

The hill-walking (which is more my style) is also easily accessible by campervans and RVs, since the dirt roads leading to them usually need vehicle transport to arrive. With our new tires we got from a friend, we’d be able to pretend* we have a T3. Ha.

Camping in Sardinia

Taking your van in the off-season in Sardinia poses several problems: it’s illegal to wild camp; many campsites are closed off-season; and paid parking can run up expensive. The upside is that there are many sites that aren’t expensive (called “Area sosta Camper” which equals RV park) and you can find them all across the island.
